“I Should Have Died That Day”: A Story of God’s Mercy and Grace

When God Saves You Twice: Mick Weinholt’s Story of Survival and Faith

Some stories stay with you long after the mic turns off.
This one will, too.

My guest today, Mick Weinholt, shares a journey that begins with a breathtaking near-death experience and ends in total surrender to Christ. From surviving a devastating avalanche in the Colorado mountains to facing the unthinkable loss of his firstborn son, Mick’s testimony shows how God rescues not only the body—but also the soul.

The Avalanche That Should Have Ended His Life

At nineteen, Mick set out to climb Colorado’s Gray’s Peak—a climb fueled by pride and the need to prove himself. Within minutes, the mountain gave way beneath him.

He triggered an avalanche that sent him tumbling hundreds of feet. He regained consciousness at the bottom, bleeding and broken, alone in the snow.

By God’s grace, a stranger named Steve appeared in the empty parking lot moments before Mick staggered back to his truck.

“He had no reason to be there,” Mick said. “God dispatched him. I would have died without him.”

That rescue wasn’t luck. It was divine mercy.

A Pride Humbled—but Not Yet Transformed

After emergency brain surgery and weeks of recovery, Mick knew God had spared his life.
But he admits that though he believed in God, he didn’t know Him.

“I knew about Jesus. I didn’t have a relationship with Him,” he confessed.

He left the hospital grateful, but pride still lingered. It would take another heartbreak to bring him to his knees.

The Loss That Changed Everything

Years later, Mick and his wife welcomed the joy of expecting their first child—a healthy baby boy they named Luke. But just days before his birth, tragedy struck. Luke passed away in utero.

“We thought we had a Luke-shaped hole in our hearts,” Mick shared softly. “But God showed us we had a God-shaped hole—and He filled it.”

That loss became the turning point of Mick’s faith. Through grief, he and his wife cried out to God—and He met them there.

When Surrender Becomes Worship

In time, God gave Mick a new kind of strength: humility.

“Because you are created, you are subject to—not central in—your own life,” he said, recalling a moment when the Holy Spirit spoke this truth into his heart.

Now, his prayers sound different.
They’re no longer a list of requests, but a simple submission: Your will be done.
