The Village Needs You: Why Christian Community Matters for Spiritual Growth
When God designed us, He never intended for us to grow alone. In this week’s conversation, I sat down with my friend and fellow podcaster Mr. You (Yousef) to talk about something that touches every part of who we are — community.
So many of us believe faith is a solo journey, but Scripture tells another story. We are shaped, tested, and refined together. As Mr. You shared his own story — from his New York upbringing to his life now as a coach, mentor, and podcaster — one theme stood out clearly: growth happens in the village.
Community: The Hidden Answer to Our Prayers
Mr. You grew up in a neighborhood where the saying “it takes a village to raise a child” was more than a slogan — it was real life. If he made a mistake on the street, the neighbors corrected him before his mother ever knew.
That accountability, he says, became a foundation for understanding how God uses community to shape character:
“We keep crying out to heaven for answers, but God often places those answers inside the community.”

That truth resonated deeply with me. How many of us have prayed for guidance, encouragement, or purpose — while isolating ourselves from the very people God wants to use to bring it?
When Jesus Needed His Friends
Even Jesus modeled community. In Gethsemane, He asked His disciples to stay awake and pray with Him, but they fell asleep. He wanted their presence, their support, their prayers. If our Savior longed for companionship in His darkest hour, how much more do we need one another?

Community doesn’t just support us; it refines us. It gives us people who remind us to keep going, who pray when we can’t find words, who notice when our faith is faltering.
The Power of Safe Spaces
Mr. You now pours his heart into Men’s Roundtable, a global gathering where men from every walk of life come together to speak honestly about faith, identity, and purpose. It’s not therapy or a sermon — it’s fellowship.
He says,
“It’s not rocket science. It’s just giving men a safe place to be transparent, knowing no one will weaponize what they say.”

That kind of trust builds brotherhood. And it’s a picture of what the Church was always meant to be — a safe space for honesty where healing begins.
Faith Flourishes in Fellowship
I’ll admit, I wasn’t always open to community. I used to tell myself I didn’t need friends — that people only let me down. But the older I get, the more I realize God never designed us for isolation.
Now I have friends I can call, text, and pray with — people like Mr. You who genuinely care how my family is doing. Those small, sacred connections remind me daily that spiritual growth doesn’t happen in a vacuum; it occurs in relationship.
Finding Your Village Again
Maybe you’ve been hurt before. Perhaps you’ve built walls to protect yourself. But what if the very healing you’ve been praying for is waiting inside the relationships God is nudging you toward?
Your village might look different now — a prayer group, a podcast community, a church small group, or even an online space where faith feels alive again. Don’t underestimate the quiet ways God works through people.
Because in the end, as Mr. You reminded me:
“Your answer to prayer is in the community. It’s never in isolation.”
