Tribute to Masculinity (Week 3): Faith and Love in Life’s Darkest Hour
When the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world, it left behind stories marked by fear, loss, and profound transformation. In this episode of Honest Christian Conversations, I speak with Jo'mel Powell, whose testimony reveals what masculine strength looks like when life falls apart.
Jo’Mel shares his journey from a troubled upbringing on the west side of Detroit to a life transformed by faith after encountering God through Scripture. Years later, he married the woman he loved, and, like many couples, they faced relationship challenges that were exacerbated in the early days of the pandemic. As they worked toward reconciliation and prepared to welcome their first child, tragedy struck when his wife contracted COVID-19 during her third trimester.
This conversation walks through the unimaginable reality Jo’Mel faced—becoming a first-time father. At the same time, his wife lay in a medically induced coma, navigating solo parenting, and later caring for his wife after she awoke with severe disabilities. Through heartbreak, uncertainty, and exhaustion, Jo’Mel reflects on how God used suffering to deepen his faith, refine his character, and redefine strength. His story offers a powerful picture of masculinity rooted not in control, but in sacrifice, commitment, and unwavering love.
