Raising children with strong faith foundations has never been more challenging. In this episode of Honest Christian Conversations, I’m joined by Josh Poteet, pastor of 180 Life Church and author of Parenting Against the Current, to discuss what it looks like to intentionally disciple children in a culture moving in the opposite direction.
Josh challenges parents to reclaim their God-given role as the primary disciplers of their children rather than outsourcing spiritual formation entirely to church programs. We explore his concept of needs-based parenting—an approach that adapts as children grow, gradually releasing control while preparing them for spiritual independence. This episode reframes Christian parenting not as micromanagement, but as purposeful leadership that moves from modeling to coaching to trust.
One of the most countercultural aspects of this conversation is the call for vulnerability. Josh explains why parents—especially fathers—must model humility, repentance, and grace rather than perfection. When children see their parents acknowledge mistakes and lean on Christ, they learn that faith is real, redemptive, and safe. We also discuss becoming a destination parent—leading your family with clear values and direction instead of drifting with cultural expectations.

Ana's heart is to help others navigate the same tension she once lived with: wanting to know the real Jesus while sorting through the noise of deceptive teachings, spiritual manipulation, and “wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
Everything she creates flows from gratitude for the God who rescued her, restored her, and continues to shape her into who He intended her to be.
