When Scripture Feels Hard to Understand—God Makes It Clear
When Dan Parr first reached out to me about coming on the show to share that he had written a new Bible translation, my reaction was immediate skepticism. I come from a legalistic background, and after years of deconstructing and rebuilding my faith, the idea of another translation felt unsettling. Scripture is sacred. The thought of changing it—even with good intentions—can feel deeply uncomfortable.
But after prayer, vetting, and honest conversation, I felt peace about inviting Dan on the show. And I told him directly—I wasn’t coming into this conversation without questions. To his credit, Dan welcomed that skepticism. He reminded me that questioning, testing, and comparing Scripture is not rebellion—it’s biblical. It’s Berean.
Dan didn’t set out to create a new Bible translation as a career move or platform. What unfolded was a calling shaped by hardship, obedience, and reverence for God’s Word. After losing his job and wrestling with what was next, Dan—who has a background in radio and voice work—felt God prompt him to record Scripture. But the translations available were either difficult for modern listeners to understand or restricted by copyright. So Dan stepped out in faith and began translating Scripture with one goal: clarity without compromise.
The result was the Easy-to-Understand Read Bible (EUR)—a translation rooted in the public-domain World English Bible, carefully cross-checked against trusted translations and commentaries. Dan read every verse aloud as he worked, believing that if Scripture didn’t sound clear to the ear, it might not land on the heart. His aim wasn’t to modernize truth, but to remove unnecessary barriers so people could finally hear it.
During the episode, Dan read the story of the widow’s mite first from the King James Version, then from the EUR. The message didn’t change—but the clarity did. The truth that generosity is measured by sacrifice, not amount, came through unmistakably. That moment captured the heart of this conversation: simplifying truth isn’t dumbing it down—it’s lowering the ladder so more people can climb.
Today, the EUR is available in print and audio, helping new believers, tired parents, and those who stopped reading Scripture because it felt too hard rediscover God’s Word. This project isn’t about replacing the Bible you love—it’s about helping more people love it again.
🎧 Listen to the episode to hear why skepticism can be holy, how clarity can be compassionate, and how God still speaks powerfully when His Word is understood.
