Have you ever compared God to your earthly father?

For many of us, the way we view God is shaped by our experiences with the people who raised us. If your earthly father was absent, abusive, or emotionally distant, it can be easy to assume that God will treat you the same way.

In this minisode of Honest Christian Conversations, I share a reflection that came after my conversation with Denise G. Lee about her powerful journey through sexual abuse, addiction, and healing.

Her story reminded me of something deeply important: God is not your earthly father.

WEBVTT

00:00:00.179 --> 00:00:01.883
Welcome back to another mini-sode.

00:00:01.883 --> 00:00:03.668
Friends, how's your week been?

00:00:03.668 --> 00:00:13.512
I wanted to talk today about a sensitive topic that was discussed during this last episode with Denise G Lee.

00:00:13.512 --> 00:00:16.103
I don't know if you had a chance to listen to it yet.

00:00:16.103 --> 00:00:25.646
We discussed her sexual abuse and how that led her into an addiction of sexual content.

00:00:25.646 --> 00:00:32.869
Perhaps you haven't struggled with that kind of addiction, but I'm sure something in her story resonated with you.

00:00:33.070 --> 00:00:34.621
I resonated with the whole thing.

00:00:34.621 --> 00:00:46.075
I just felt like she was a kindred spirit, I guess, but I really wanted to discuss the topic of remembering that God is not like our parents.

00:00:46.075 --> 00:00:50.905
He is our heavenly Father, but he is not like our earthly parents.

00:00:50.905 --> 00:00:57.704
Something Denise mentioned in telling of her story how her parents were.

00:00:57.704 --> 00:01:02.600
Her father was neglectful and her mother sexually abused her until she was 11.

00:01:02.921 --> 00:01:15.162
Later in the interview she talked about how she had an angry relationship with God and she mentioned that at one point she just realized that God is not like her earthly parents.

00:01:15.162 --> 00:01:20.981
And that's what we all need to remember is that God is not like our earthly parents.

00:01:20.981 --> 00:01:23.647
He isn't due fallible things.

00:01:23.647 --> 00:01:25.750
He's not out to get us.

00:01:25.750 --> 00:01:28.620
He's not there to punish us.

00:01:28.620 --> 00:01:36.462
He's there to discipline us, but it's loving discipline and it's necessary to help us grow and be the best versions of ourselves.

00:01:36.462 --> 00:01:44.745
So I don't know who needs to hear this today, but God is not like your earthly father.

00:01:44.745 --> 00:01:50.305
God is not like your earthly mother, your earthly grandparents, whoever raised you.

00:01:50.305 --> 00:01:53.993
God created them, but he is not them.

00:01:54.239 --> 00:02:02.825
You can let go of your bitterness and anger towards God for how his people treat you, for how people in general treat you.

00:02:02.825 --> 00:02:06.733
Perhaps you were burned by the church, someone in it.

00:02:06.733 --> 00:02:10.247
That is not God and it is not his fault.

00:02:10.247 --> 00:02:19.387
People are fallible, we are selfish, we can be depraved at times and we can just not think before we act.

00:02:19.387 --> 00:02:20.729
But that is not God.

00:02:20.729 --> 00:02:27.979
He is very thoughtful, is not God?

00:02:27.979 --> 00:02:28.842
He is very thoughtful, he is very honest.

00:02:28.842 --> 00:02:30.304
He is a righteous judge, a good, good father, a loving father.

00:02:30.304 --> 00:02:33.028
His love is steadfast and strong.

00:02:33.028 --> 00:02:34.893
He cares for you.

00:02:34.893 --> 00:02:42.231
He cares for me, so much so that he sent Jesus to die on the cross for us in the midst of our sins.

00:02:42.231 --> 00:02:43.801
We weren't even born yet.

00:02:43.801 --> 00:02:45.769
Everybody who's listening to this?

00:02:45.769 --> 00:02:55.627
We weren't born yet and yet God still sent Jesus and Jesus still willfully went to the cross to die because he knew how much the Father loved us.

00:02:56.008 --> 00:03:02.925
Does that sound like the broken parent, grandparent, guardian, whatever that you had growing up?

00:03:02.925 --> 00:03:08.085
Does that sound like the leader of your church who may have hurt you?

00:03:08.085 --> 00:03:16.106
It doesn't sound like that to me and I know for a time I also had issues with how I saw God and I'm still working through those.

00:03:16.106 --> 00:03:17.770
It's an ongoing thing.

00:03:17.770 --> 00:03:23.770
It's not like it's just going to magically switch off and one day you're no longer going to think of God that way.

00:03:23.770 --> 00:03:32.472
But you have to retrain your brain daily and your heart to trust God, to allow him in, so that you can heal.

00:03:32.472 --> 00:03:34.281
You can't be bitter and angry.

00:03:34.281 --> 00:03:37.747
You have to know Jehovah Jireh, your healer.

00:03:37.747 --> 00:03:43.205
You have to know your Abba, father, and that he loves you and he's there waiting.

00:03:43.205 --> 00:03:56.252
He has his hand stretched out to you, waiting for you to take it so that he can help you out of whatever mess you're in, whether you got yourself into it or you fell into it through unfortunate circumstances.

00:03:56.539 --> 00:04:02.212
So my challenge for you this week is to let go of your pride, that you have your hubris.

00:04:02.212 --> 00:04:07.381
As Denise mentioned in the episode, the difference between pride and hubris.

00:04:07.381 --> 00:04:14.003
If you aren't sure what that is, go back and listen to the episode, but lay down your hubris, that kind of pride.

00:04:14.003 --> 00:04:17.750
Lay it down and allow God to work in you.

00:04:17.750 --> 00:04:21.603
Don't think that you have God pegged because you don't.

00:04:21.603 --> 00:04:22.625
Nobody does.

00:04:22.625 --> 00:04:25.129
Allow him to show you who he is.

00:04:25.129 --> 00:04:26.392
Read his word.

00:04:26.392 --> 00:04:56.927
Ask him to send the Holy Spirit and to allow the Holy Spirit to transform you and show you the difference between a healthy, healthy love, because if you had an upbringing anything close to what Denise went through, or just any upbringing at all, human experience, even if it was a really good one, it still pales in comparison to the love, the unconditional, perfect love of our Heavenly Father.

00:04:56.927 --> 00:05:04.773
So, whatever you went through in your past, whatever you're going through now, lay down your hubris and allow God to transform you.

00:05:04.773 --> 00:05:06.721
I hope this encouraged you today.

00:05:06.721 --> 00:05:08.925
God bless, talk to you next time.
