WEBVTT
00:00:00.059 --> 00:00:02.408
Hey friends, welcome back to another mini-sode.
00:00:02.408 --> 00:00:06.429
What did you think of the episode with Benjamin Croshaw from True Face?
00:00:06.429 --> 00:00:07.572
Isn't he a hoot?
00:00:07.572 --> 00:00:12.028
He's just very clever.
00:00:12.028 --> 00:00:18.172
He's very witty and I enjoyed talking to him about everything youth and Gen Z.
00:00:18.679 --> 00:00:25.871
True Face is a great opportunity for anyone who is struggling to find their identity.
00:00:25.871 --> 00:00:29.164
I love the fact that their content just seems evergreen.
00:00:29.164 --> 00:00:33.973
They don't need to say, oh, we're in this demographic.
00:00:33.973 --> 00:00:40.250
If you feel it, if you resonate with it, then you can be a part of their team.
00:00:40.250 --> 00:00:46.715
You can partake in what they're giving out, their content, and I love that.
00:00:46.956 --> 00:00:51.729
It's very important that we all know what our identity is in Christ.
00:00:51.729 --> 00:01:01.103
That way, we can survive this world who's constantly trying to have us put our identities in other places where they don't belong, and our children are no different.
00:01:01.103 --> 00:01:05.480
If you have a child in public school, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
00:01:05.480 --> 00:01:10.572
They're constantly trying to steer our kids in the wrong direction, and it's not okay.
00:01:10.572 --> 00:01:21.203
As Christian parents, we should be instilling in our children the importance of knowing who they are in Christ, because once they have that firm foundation, they're not going to be looking for it anywhere else.
00:01:21.203 --> 00:01:25.757
They're going to be able to walk through life a little more healthy.
00:01:25.757 --> 00:01:31.099
Maybe they'll make bad choices we all do at some point but they'll have that firm foundation.
00:01:31.099 --> 00:01:33.825
They'll know who they are and whose they are.
00:01:33.825 --> 00:01:39.064
If you haven't had a chance to check out True Face, do go to their website, check it out.
00:01:39.064 --> 00:01:45.209
If you haven't had a chance to check out the path, make sure you do that as well, because these are great resources.
00:01:45.209 --> 00:01:48.066
Go check them out, truefaceorg, all right.
00:01:48.105 --> 00:01:54.510
Well, today I want to talk a little bit about parenting young adults.
00:01:54.510 --> 00:02:06.296
This is something that I've just entered the realm of doing, because my daughter is now 18, my eldest, and it is not easy, especially because she doesn't live with me.
00:02:06.296 --> 00:02:13.050
So that creates a whole different barrier and I have to figure out how to be her parent.
00:02:13.050 --> 00:02:21.311
While she's being a prodigal, she's slowly coming out of that transgender belief that she had.
00:02:21.311 --> 00:02:24.525
Praise God for that, that she is coming out of that.
00:02:24.525 --> 00:02:27.305
She's starting to go to church with her dad.
00:02:27.305 --> 00:02:31.661
I don't know if it's sticking, but I know God's word doesn't return void.
00:02:31.661 --> 00:02:35.027
So that's encouraging, but she still has so much growing up to do.
00:02:35.027 --> 00:02:36.992
It's so crazy.
00:02:37.212 --> 00:02:46.390
Our children may be the number 18, 19, 20, 21, but they're still our children.
00:02:46.390 --> 00:02:48.293
They're still kids.
00:02:48.293 --> 00:02:57.512
That's funny for me to say, because I kind of sometimes am told that I look like I'm in my 20s but I'm not.
00:02:57.512 --> 00:03:02.284
But it's just, it's hard to parent an adult.
00:03:02.284 --> 00:03:09.343
Even if they just turned 18, even if they're in the 30s or 40s, you're still parenting them.
00:03:09.343 --> 00:03:13.205
You're doing it differently from when they lived with you, but you're still parenting them.
00:03:13.586 --> 00:03:18.640
And it's difficult, it's a struggle and I'll be honest, I don't know how to do this.
00:03:18.640 --> 00:03:31.808
From a distance, I don't know where my parenting has to stop and her choices, whether they're good or bad, starts and I just have to be there to help her pick up those pieces afterwards.
00:03:31.808 --> 00:03:37.353
Or if it was one of those moments where I should have been there to help her and I didn't because I wasn't sure.
00:03:37.353 --> 00:03:45.578
There's just so much to trying to parent an adult, especially one who's having trouble with their identity.
00:03:45.578 --> 00:03:49.426
As I said, she's coming out of that gender stuff as well.
00:03:49.426 --> 00:03:58.441
She's having to find her identity and she's not quite ready yet to find it in Christ, which is hard, but at least she's more receptive to church and everything.
00:03:58.441 --> 00:03:59.623
So that's a plus.
00:03:59.824 --> 00:04:01.407
But our children need us.
00:04:01.407 --> 00:04:15.010
That's the takeaway I want you to have if you're an adoptive parent or a surrogate parent, whatever it is.
00:04:15.010 --> 00:04:18.908
Your child needs you, the child you are ministering into.
00:04:18.908 --> 00:04:19.670
They need you.
00:04:19.670 --> 00:04:24.283
If you're a youth pastor, like Benjamin Croshaw is they need you.
00:04:24.283 --> 00:04:26.387
They need you to show up for them.
00:04:26.387 --> 00:04:30.723
They need you to show that you care to be authentic.
00:04:30.723 --> 00:04:48.461
Our kids need to see that we are authentic people, that we make mistakes, that we struggle, that we are confused sometimes, but we also need to show them where to take all that confusion and all that difficulty and all that frustration and heartbreak and all those negative things.
00:04:48.461 --> 00:04:52.401
They need to know that they can take them to the cross and we have to show them that.
00:04:52.401 --> 00:04:57.826
We have to show them that we take our things to God when we are struggling.
00:04:57.826 --> 00:05:04.987
And if they don't see that from us, why would they want to do that themselves?
00:05:04.987 --> 00:05:06.853
We're just saying things.
00:05:06.853 --> 00:05:08.557
We're not meaning what we say.
00:05:08.557 --> 00:05:10.360
We have to practice what we preach.
00:05:10.581 --> 00:05:16.610
I've been working really hard on being vulnerable in front of my kids, being honest with them and telling them you know, mom's struggling.
00:05:16.610 --> 00:05:18.774
Today I made a big mistake.
00:05:18.774 --> 00:05:20.663
I'm sorry, I've repented.
00:05:20.663 --> 00:05:31.329
I mean I shared during the last mini-sode about one of my moments where I blew up on everybody and I also apologized, humbled enough to apologize.
00:05:31.329 --> 00:05:33.541
Our kids need to see those moments.
00:05:33.541 --> 00:05:40.512
They need to know that they aren't alone in their struggles, that we are there for them, that somebody is there for them.
00:05:40.512 --> 00:05:43.567
Most importantly, they need to know that God is there for them.
00:05:43.887 --> 00:06:05.050
If you're parenting a young adult, if you're parenting a teen who's older and more self-sufficient, you can still be there for them in this capacity as well, because they may not ask you for your advice, they may not think they need your advice but just be a good example to them of how to live, how to work.
00:06:05.050 --> 00:06:15.113
Through your struggles and your troubles and your heartbreaks and your confusions and your worries and your doubts and your identity crisis you may be having, you can be a good example.
00:06:15.113 --> 00:06:17.908
You don't have to always tell them these things.
00:06:17.908 --> 00:06:22.247
You can show them, and that's what we should be doing as parents.
00:06:22.247 --> 00:06:29.194
So that is what I'm trying to do with my daughter now that she is considered an adult by age.
00:06:29.194 --> 00:06:38.069
I am in a new stage of life where I am trying to be there for her the best way I can, even though I'm out in Connecticut and she's in Tennessee.
00:06:38.069 --> 00:06:45.713
There's a distance between us, but we have communication still and I pray for her often.
00:06:45.713 --> 00:06:47.726
I'm trusting God with her.
00:06:47.726 --> 00:06:56.271
That's another thing that we, as parents of adults have to do is we have to trust God with them, because they're fully in his hands 24-7.
00:06:56.271 --> 00:07:07.764
They were in our hands for a time and if we've done our job as their parents, we hope that they'll thrive and God will be there with them when we can't.
00:07:07.764 --> 00:07:10.668
So I hope this has encouraged you today.
00:07:11.509 --> 00:07:25.237
My question and my challenge for you today is if you are somebody who is parenting a young adult or a teen, how have you showed up for them today?
00:07:25.237 --> 00:07:32.540
And if you're feeling a little guilty because you haven't shown up for them in the way that you would like, find a way to do that.
00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:41.129
If you don't have a young adult in your house, if you're not parenting one, there has to be a young adult near you.
00:07:41.129 --> 00:07:43.781
There has to be a teen near you somehow.
00:07:43.781 --> 00:07:47.408
Maybe it's a teen who works at a grocery store.
00:07:47.408 --> 00:07:53.386
Perhaps it's a young adult who works as a waitress waiter.
00:07:53.386 --> 00:07:55.451
There's young people everywhere.
00:07:55.451 --> 00:07:58.024
There are teens everywhere.
00:07:58.024 --> 00:08:00.889
Be an encouragement to them today.
00:08:00.889 --> 00:08:03.093
They may not tell you they're struggling.
00:08:03.093 --> 00:08:08.680
Maybe you can't see it on their face when they're smiling as they're checking out your groceries.
00:08:08.680 --> 00:08:12.548
Or they're handing you your meal, but they're struggling.
00:08:12.548 --> 00:08:14.072
They're wondering.
00:08:14.072 --> 00:08:16.682
Or they're handing you your meal, but they're struggling.
00:08:16.682 --> 00:08:17.463
They're wondering what is this all for?
00:08:17.463 --> 00:08:21.670
Be a voice of God to them, be an encouragement to them.
00:08:21.670 --> 00:08:30.891
Show them the light through how you act, and if you have the ability to be a mentor to these kids, then do that.
00:08:30.891 --> 00:08:35.187
If you are a youth pastor, do your best as a youth pastor.
00:08:35.187 --> 00:08:37.760
Show up for them, be there for them.
00:08:37.760 --> 00:08:39.966
That means the world to them.
00:08:39.966 --> 00:08:42.511
Maybe you were the only one who ever does.
00:08:43.013 --> 00:08:50.366
These are important things we need to do and these are things that I'm going to work on with my eldest, with my other children, all five of them.
00:08:50.366 --> 00:09:01.520
This is something that I'm working on and it's going to take sacrifice, and I think that's the working on and it's going to take sacrifice, and I think that's the biggest reason why we haven't done it Not just me, but us as a people in general.
00:09:01.520 --> 00:09:08.426
I think the biggest reason why we're not always present the way we want to be is because of how difficult it is and time consuming.
00:09:08.426 --> 00:09:21.028
It takes energy, it takes time and it takes sacrifice of what we might want to do, and sometimes we have to do the hard work and we have to do the sacrifice, and I'm speaking to myself with this too.
00:09:21.028 --> 00:09:24.009
So if you're feeling convicted, just know that I am too.
00:09:24.009 --> 00:09:27.168
That's this mini-sode.
00:09:27.168 --> 00:09:32.070
I hope you all have a wonderful day and a good rest of your week.
